Brush Rolls

These are the reason Pickle Pie was originally set up. Several years ago, I found a tutorial online (sadly no longer available – I have checked) for a make-up brush roll. I decided to have a go and chose some beautiful material from John Lewis to make it with. Because it wasn’t cheap, and I hadn’t attempted anything other than making bunting for my wedding in many years, I had a go with some cheap cotton to make a brush roll for hubby’s painting brushes. It worked, so I made my make-up roll, which I still use today. I made at least one more of them as a gift, but then didn’t venture any further until I was involved in sugarcraft classes.

Having started to get into cake decorating, I ended up with loads of tools and brushes rolling around my box of cake bits. I remembered the make-up brush roll and decided it should work well for all my tools. So I found some gorgeous material, Sweet Treats by Michael Miller (with a Kona solid for the lining and pocket), and made a new roll. It worked beautifully!

Several months later, I made a longer one for my brushes so they didn’t get squashed, and a tiny one for the mini tools.

Sarah, from The Cupcake Oven saw them and persuaded me to make some more. So I did, and then decided to set up Pickle Pie as a possible future development idea. I even got some labels made!

Here are some of the most recent ones, mainly made as gifts. I do 2 sizes usually – 15 inches for brushes and sugarcraft tools, and 12 inches for make-up brush rolls. I still harbour ideas of making on suitable for floristry wires, but I need to be better at appliqué first – if anyone wants to commission one, I will find the time to make one 🙂

The most recent ones have an adaptation to the pattern. I didn’t have enough of the purple Kona fabric to make the pocket on the inside of the spotty one, so attached some of the spotty fabric to it. When I pressed the fold and put it on the main piece, I decided that I rather liked the look of a border created by folding a short bit over. Hence all of these most recent 3 rolls have this border added.

  1. Love these and you have some beautiful fabric. I made something very similar years ago (when I was a student.. so VERY many years ago) for my knitting needles.
